Shoplifting Program Class 8

About

Welcome to Class 8 of the Shoplifting & Theft Intervention Program – The Impact of Shoplifting on Businesses and Communities. Facilitated by Tera Chapman, this session focuses on understanding how shoplifting affects not only the individual, but also businesses, employees, customers, and the wider community. In this class, we will explore how shoplifting creates a ripple effect, leading to financial losses for businesses, increased security measures, higher prices for customers, and in some cases, job cuts or store closures. Participants will also examine the impact on employees, including increased stress, safety concerns, and job insecurity. The session will highlight how theft affects the overall customer experience, often resulting in stricter store policies and a reduced sense of trust in public spaces. Beyond this, we will explore the broader community and economic impact, including fewer local jobs, limited access to essential goods, and declining neighborhood stability when businesses struggle or leave. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on how individual actions contribute to larger patterns and how responsible choices can positively influence communities. The importance of ethical decision-making and accountability will be emphasized throughout the session. By the end of this class, participants will have a clearer understanding of the real impact of shoplifting and be better equipped to make decisions that support stronger businesses, safer environments, and healthier communities.
