Welcome to Class 7 of the Shoplifting & Theft Intervention Program – The Psychology of Theft and Criminal Thinking. Facilitated by Tera Chapman, this session focuses on understanding the deeper thought patterns and psychological factors that drive theft-related behavior. In this class, we will explore how shoplifting is often influenced by underlying emotional, psychological, and social factors, rather than being just a simple decision in the moment. Participants will gain insight into the different motivations behind theft, including emotional coping, thrill-seeking, entitlement thinking, and social influence. The session will guide participants in recognizing the cycle of theft, including triggers, urges, justifications, the act itself, and the emotional aftermath that follows. Understanding this cycle helps individuals identify where they can interrupt the pattern before it repeats. Participants will also learn about criminal thinking patterns—the thought processes that justify or minimize harmful behavior. These include blaming others, downplaying consequences, entitlement, victim thinking, and overconfidence. By becoming aware of these patterns, individuals can begin to challenge and change the way they think. In addition, this session focuses on developing healthier thinking by learning how to recognize, question, and replace harmful thoughts, while taking positive action. Participants will also explore the difference between reasons and excuses, and how taking responsibility creates the foundation for real change. Beyond awareness, the class emphasizes long-term growth through building self-discipline, strengthening integrity, thinking about future consequences, and surrounding oneself with positive influences. These elements support not only behavior change but also a shift in identity and mindset.
